What’s this, democracy?

The project has been awarded as SUCCESS STORY. See the Letter of the Directorate-General for Education and Culture of the European Commission.

Human rights, respect, tolerance, rules, law, power, influence, Round Table, (social) justice, dignity, elections, criticism, “big brother”, change, crisis, demonstrations, public sphere and media – the word “democracy” evokes several associations. For sure, democracy does not come from heaven. It is a lifelong learning task in all fields of society; within family, among friends, in the context of work, within economy, state and at EU level.

This is the theme of our European cooperation project. It brings together citizens from the Women center FRIEDA in Berlin, the Ecocentric Foundation in Sofia / Bulgaria, the Université du Citoyen in Marseille / France and the association Antikomplex in Prague / Czech Republic.

We wish to bridge the gap between professional politicians and “people in the street”. We work with participative, learner-led creative approaches based on participant’s experiences and concerns. Our local project groups provide forums to bring small scale lives and the “big picture” of society/politics together. We work with the theatre of the oppressed method, role-playing and situational games, discussion events with (local) politicians, world café, and others.

During 4 transnational meetings we focus on 1. our perceptions of democracy against the background of each country’s situation, 2. democracy and political structures at EU level, 3. social conditions of democracy, 4. our visions for Europe and its sustainable democratic development. We share our methods and practise them together at the common meetings to train new ways of self-expression (learners) and methods to stimulate active citizenship (trainers). The experiences are documented at this blog.
